Help Historical Society Celebrate 40 Years TWENTYNINE PALMS -- The Twentynine Palms Historical Society will celebrate its 40th anniversary with a barbecue from 5 to 8 p.m. Aug. 20 at the Old Schoolhouse Museum, 6760 National Park Drive. The event is open to everyone. Pitmaster Larry Bowden will serve up his legendary tri-tip. Salads, desert desserts, and drinks are also on the menu. A small opportunity drawing is being organized, as well as a summer sale in the gift shop. The Old Schoolhouse Museum will be open after hours for this special event. Dave Stancliff, the Desert Trail editor in 1982, wrote that society founders Bob and Edith Carter, Jeff Dunn, Cheryl Erickson, Art Kidwell, Don Malone, Ginny Salisbury, Bob Smeton, and Diana Stevens met at the Senior Citizens Center with a common goal in mind. “We all wanted to preserve the rich heritage of Twentynine Palms and were concerned that, with the passing of time, historical information would be harder to come by,” Edith Carter said. “So we decided to get organized and do something about it. We were aware that many pioneers had passed away or had left the area, and we felt that those who remain could provide valuable insights into the past.” “The main reason we’re starting now is we still have the people with the knowledge and the background to supply us with exact quotes and to tell us how things were done,” Bob Carter said. Pre-sale tickets will be available at the museum, and from board members at a cost of $15 for members, $20 for non-members and $5 for children under 12. Walk-up tickets will also be available at the door.
